We (Tim and Emma) gained a wealth of experience working around the world in some of the finest hotels and restaurants. Tim spent ten years under the late Francis Coulson at Sharrow Bay, Cumbria - it was here that he developed his individual style, and met me - Emma! Our family includes two sons Ben and Olly (who also help in the restaurant), Ellie a Pointer dog, two horses, Pip and Maverick and cats Max and Foxy. We wanted to follow our dream and have our own restaurant. We became aware that Little Barwick House was for sale and we decided to “go for it”!
It took every last penny to buy Little Barwick House in January 2000. The building was tired and unloved. With a very tight budget left in the pot we set about painting and refurbishing, buying essential kitchen equipment and tableware. We had only one month before opening and worked relentlessly trying to revitalise our new venture. As the deadline grew closer, tempers were close to breaking point most of the time, but we made it and reopened to a full restaurant on March 1st. 2000.
The change from being an employee to being a partner in your own business is enormous, especially at first when it feels like you are on an endless rollercoaster of highs and lows. Everything in our life became centered around Little Barwick House. Our purpose was to create a relaxed and civilised restaurant, decorated in a classic style with a modern twist; somewhere we and our friends would like to stay, with Great Hospitality, Great Food and a Great Wine List, coupled with an unstuffy, relaxed atmosphere.
So, 16 years on, are there any regrets? Absolutely not! – We have brought up our family, had a great deal of fun, met some fantastic people and developed one of the best Restaurant with Rooms not only in Somerset but in the UK.
We feature favourably in all the hotel and restaurant guides. We are proud to have consistently maintained “The César Award” from the Good Hotel Guide for high standards every year since 2002 and this year we are also The Editors Choice Gourmet Hotel. We were also awarded a Fabulous Food Award by Alistair Sawdays and are also a Michelin recommended restaurant. We are regarded as one of Somerset’s best longstanding restaurants in the Good Food Guide, which highlights our wine list as well. We have also maintained Three AA Rosettes and Five Star Inspectors Choice Restaurant with Rooms since opening in 2000. In addition, our Wine List has won awards each year from the AA.
We continue to strive to maintain standards and to evolve – not too much though! To quote this year's “Good Food Guide”: “mercifully free of foams and whizz bang trickery. Unwavering consistency is the kitchen's hallmark”
